Below is an example of a graph I developed as a UX tool for use in pre-production and production. It shows the plotline action alongside character development. This guides the story pace for the writers and artists, showing them where the user needs to feel tension or relief, thereby eliminating any potential dull points in the User Experience.
I devised this methodology after studying several fast-paced stories of Dr Seuss and plotting their action development. The resulting graphs revealed a common pattern of mounting tension, with three or more peaks and short plateaus, that builds to a final climax, followed by an immediate and sharp drop in tension and a final resolution scene for a satisfying ending.
